The successful integration of migrants and members of ethnic minority groups in the multicultural societies of Europe and North America is heavily dependent on the extent to which they are offered opportunities for social participation and paths to upward social mobility. While countries which attract a large number of immigrants are commonly confronted with similar challenges, including increasing ethnic and religious diversification, demographic change and declining growth rates and shares in the world market, their political, social and economic responses are often very different.

The third edition of the benchmark study Migrant Integration Policy Index (MIPEX III) compares the strategies of 31 countries of immigration in order to highlight drivers as well as barriers to social mobility and participation. The study examines the integration policies of the 27 EU Member States as well as Norway, Switzerland, Canada and the USA. On the basis of over 200 policy indicators the Index draws a comprehensive and multi-dimensional picture of the opportunities migrants have to participate in society.

Alongside the British Council and the Migration Policy Group, who led the coordination of the study, the Index is supported by 37
