The Border Project

Grenzen schützen das Innen vom Außen, sie schließen alles außerhalb ihrer Begrenzung aus. Sie ermöglichen den Gegensatz von "uns" und "den Anderen", konstruieren unsere Welt, unsere souveränen Räume und unsere Identität. Und sie bestehen auch in unserer globalisierten Welt fort, in der das einzige ökonomische System und der ständige technologische Fortschritt viele Grenzen niederreißen, zugleich jedoch neue Barrieren und Hierarchien aufbauen.

In der Kombination von digitalen Prints, Objekten, Video Performance sowie einem breiten Spektrum verschiedener künstlerischer Strategien, persönlicher Erfahrungen bis hin zu spielerisch ironischen Interventionen ist "The Border" ein multimediales Projekt, das sich mit der Warnehmung von Grenzen auseinandersetzt. Es verarbeitet das Gefühl des Eingezäunt-Seins das heute, dank einer restriktiven und einschränkenden Visa-Politik von vielen, insbesondere jungen Menschen auf dem Balkan, geteilt wird. Denn es gibt nur wenige Länder auf der Welt, für die sie kein Visum benötigen.

Borders protect the inside from the outside, excluding (restricting) everything beyond their limits. They make possible the opposition between us and them, construct our world, our sovereign space, and our identity. And they continue to exist even in our globalized world where the emerging single global economic system and continuous advancements in technology are bringing down many boundaries, while at the same time imposing new barriers and hierarchical stratification.

Combining digital prints, objects, video and performance, and a host of artistic strategies ranging from direct experience to playful/ironic interventions, "The Border" is a multimedia project that focuses on the personal experiencing of borders, i.e. the feeling of being fenced in, which is a feeling shared by many people in the Balkans these days (especially young people), due to the strict and prohibitive visa regime: there are very few countries in the world they don't need a visa for.

Fortress Europe

"Fortress Europe" ist eine digital modifizierte Fotografie der Berliner Mauer aus den 60er Jahren. Das Bild zeigt Menschen in Westberlin, die über die von Russen gebaute Mauer in den Ostteil der Stadt spähen. Der Fall der Berliner Mauer im Jahr1989, des Symbols der Teilung Europas, signalisiert den Beginn der europäischen Einigung und Integration. Dennoch ist die Wahrnehmung des Balkan, dass Europa nun erneut von einer neuen Mauer geteilt wird – diesmal errichtet durch die Europäische Union selbst. Die Menschen von anderen Ländern werden ausgesperrt, sie dürfen das Leben hinter dieser Mauer nur beobachten, aber nicht daran teilnehmen.

"Fortress Europe” is a digital print of a digitally edited 1960s found photograph of the Berlin Wall. On the photograph, people from the Western part of Berlin are peeking over the wall built by the Russians and into the Eastern part. The fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989, which had been the symbol of divided Europe for 30 years, signaled the start of the unification of Europe. However, the perception in the Balkans is that now Europe is once again divided, and a new wall is set in place only this time by the EU itself, and countries and nations are being left out (the "other" of Europe), allowed only to take a peek at the life on the other side and denied to take part in it.

Travels

“Travels” ist ein sich noch im Prozess befindendes Projekt, das mit lebensgroßen Cut-Out-Figuren meiner selbst begann, die zu Menschen in verschiedenen Ländern geschickt wurden, damit sie dort “herumgeführt” und vor bekannten Sehenswürdigkeiten fotografiert werden konnten. Diese Fotografien wurden anschließend zurück zu mir gesendet. In ihrer Tour um den Globus passierten die Cut-Outs diverse Zollkontrollen und andere Barrieren und stellten somit institutionelle Restriktionen der Grenzregimes auf die Probe.

“Travels” is an ongoing project that started as a life-size cutout figure of me which was mailed it to people in several countries for them to "show" it around the country and send back photographs of it with some recognizable landmark in the background. All cut-outs went through customs controls etc., probing most of the institutional aspects and restrictions related to borders. The double/s went on tour around the world, “visiting” Sydney, Los Angeles/Hollywood, Oxford, Paris, Copenhagen, etc., bringing in more than 100 photographs by various contributors.

Der transdisziplinär arbeitetende Künstler Zoran Poposki (geb. 1974, Skopje) lebt in Mazedonien. Seine künstlerische Praxis kombiniert Video- und Performancearbeiten, sowie digitale Prints und beschäftigt sich mit Liminalität und der kontinuierlichen Veränderung/Produktion von Identität, Territorium und öffentlichem Raum. Seine Arbeiten wurden in 10 Einzelausstellungen und mehr als 20 Gruppenausstellungen in den USA, Australien, Deutschland, Frankreich, Italien, der Türkei, Puerto Rico, Slovenien, Mazedonien, Polen usw. gezeigt. Poposki erhielt seinen Master of Fine Arts in New Media vom Transart Institute / DUK University in Linz/Österreich. Er hat an KünstlerInnen-Stipendien an der School of Visual Arts NYC und Berlin teilgenommen.

Zoran Poposki (b. 1974, Skopje) is a transdisciplinary artist based in Macedonia, whose artistic practice is a combination of video, performance and digital prints, and deals with issues of liminality and the constant shifting/ production of identity, territory, and public space. His work has been exhibited in 10 solo and more than 20 group exhibitions in USA, Austria, Germany, France, Italy, Turkey, Puerto Rico, Slovenia, Macedonia, Poland, etc. Poposki received his Master of Fine Arts in New Media from Transart Institute/ DUK University in Linz, Austria. He has also participated in artist residencies at the School of Visual Arts in NYC and Berlin.
