I am sitting on a dock at a bay
watching my kind flow away. Sometimes even just flushed
away. My kind, the "don't throw it into my
face" - kind. The out and loud kind.
Sometimes proud kind. The "can't deny
myself and the things I see, feel, hear" - kind.
The kind kind which doesn't want,
cannot accept the offered place in any war
machine:
"sister/outsider
speak to me
and tell me
what kind of outsider you want to be.

To let my political body become a target place
for 'holy ones' to redeem themselves. Is it for
mothers to cover the eyes of their daughters
so that they shall not become what I seem to
be. Is it for boys2men who need to call me
names to ensure there yet unsecured male
identity. An enemy body for leaders to ensure
their positions as oppressors masked as
freedom fighters, in a sadistic fame game:
"we hail our name
in realities of fear and myth

Where as I am only sharing myself to the

Silence is death'
Dieser Slogan der AIDS-Bewegung aus den 1980er Jahren repräsentiert für mich die Konsequenz jeglicher Tabuisierung.Seit meiner frühesten Kindheit beschäftige ich mich mit der Kluft zwischen dem, was ich wahrnehme und dem, was allgemein gültig ist und akzeptiert wird. In meiner Wahrnehmung werden gesellschaftlich unbequeme Themen in einen Mantel des Schweigens gehüllt und tabuisiert. Diese Beschränkung begreife ich als eine seelische und geistige Verkümmerung. Hierin liegt die Motivation meiner Arbeit. Wenn ich zeichne, male und schreibe, schaffe ich eine Realität, die Schweigen bricht, Unsichtbares sichtbar werden lässt.

In meinen Arbeiten verwende ich Zeichnungen, Collagen und Text, um sowohl unabhängige Zeichnungen als auch Comic- Szenarios zu erschaffen. Ich zeichne impulsiv. Rhythmus, freier Ausdruck, runde Formen schaffen Bewegung im Bild. Meine Zeichnungen sind nicht 'clean-cut', jedoch oftmals humorvoll, subtil und auf den Punkt gebracht. Die Verwendung von Holzkohle erlaubt es mir, mich auf raue Bewegung, einfache Linienführung mit einer fragilen, sanften Struktur zu schaffen, ungeachtet des rauen,'schmierigen' Aussehens.

This slogan from the 1980'ies AIDS movement represents for me the consequences of any taboo. Since my early childhood years I struggle with the discrepancy between what I directly experience and what than often had become common acceptance through social conventions and a language of silence. Taboos implanted by words and visuals which I understand as an intelectual and emotional diminishment. Here lies the
motivation for my work. When I draw, paint and write I create a reality which breaks silence, which turns invisibility into visibility. In my work I use drawing, collage and text to create both independent drawings and comic scenarios.

I draw out of an impulse. Rhythm, free expression, rounded form creating movement in the picture. My drawings are not clean-cut yet often humorous, subtle and to the point. Using charcoal allows me to focus on raw movement, 'simple' lines with a fragile, soft structure despite its
rough, smudgy look.

Über Beldan Sezen

Beldan Sezen, Jg. 1967, türkischer Herkunft, ist geboren und aufgewachsen in Wiesbaden und lebt seit fünfzehn Jahren in Amsterdam. Seit 2004 ist sie als freischaffende Künstlerin tätig und arbeitet mit Illustrationen, Comics und animierten Kurzfilmen. Ihre Arbeiten nahmen an Gruppen und Einzelasustellungen in Amsterdam, London, San Francisco, Köln und Berlin teil. Ihre Gedichte sowie ihre Comics und Zeichnungen wurden in Anthologien und Zeitschriften veröffentlicht. Zur Zeit arbeitet sie an ihrem ersten Comic-Krimi, der in Herbst 2009 im frauenmuseum zu Wiesbaden ausgestellt wird.

Beldan Sezen is of Turkish origin, born in 1967 and grew up in Germany. For the last fivteen years she is based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. Since 2004 she has worked as a freelance artist, having done illustrations, cartoons and short animation films. Her drawings and paintings have been part of solo and group exhibitions in Amsterdam, London, Cologne and Berlin. Her poetry has been published in anthologies and magazines, as have many of her drawings and comic-strips. Currently she is working on her first graphic murder mystery which will be exhibitioned at the frauenmuseum in Wiesbaden this fall.
