Antoine Vumilia Muhindo, geboren am 11.06.1972 in Kisangani (Kongo) ist Dichter, Bühnenautor, Regisseur und Schauspieler. Antoine Vumilia, der sich selbst als „wütenden Künstler“ bezeichnet, kam schon in jungen Jahren mit dem Theater in Berührung. In Workshops, die vom „French Cultural Center“ in Kisangani organisiert wurden, machte er seine ersten Erfahrungen auf der Bühne. Seine Leidenschaft für die Literatur entdeckte er mit der Lektüre der Werke Victor Hugos, und nahm als Jugendlicher an lokalen Literaturwettbewerben teil. In den Jahren 1984-87 wurden seine Gedichte ausgezeichnet und er gewann zwei Wettbewerbe. Nach seinem erfolgreichen Schulabschluss in den Fächern Philosophie und Latein sammelt er weitere künstlerische Erfahrungen in Goma (Ost-Kongo).
Im Jahre 1996 begann er mit seinem Studium der Rechtswissenschaften an der Université Catholique du Graben, brach aber das Studium ab, um sich im selben Jahr der Bewegung des Revolutionsführers Laurent-Desire Kabila anzuschließen, mit dem Ziel Kongo von der 32-jährigen Diktatur des Motubu Sese Seko zu befreien. Nach dem erfolgreichen Sturz des Diktators Seko arbeitete Antoine Vumilia als hochrangiger Beamter für den neuen Präsidenten Laurent-Desire Kabila, der jedoch im Januar 2001 einem Attentat zum Opfer fiel. Im Zuge der Ermittlungen wurde Antoine Vumilia mit 84 Offizieren und Beamten aus dem engeren Umfeld des ermordeten Präsidenten verhaftet und des Mordes angeklagt. In einem Schauprozess wurden die Angeklagten des Hochverrats und der Verschwörung schuldig gesprochen. Antoine Vumilia und 30 weitere Angeklagte wurden zum Tod verurteilt. Das Urteil wurde wegen des internationalen Drucks der Menschenrechtsorganisationen nie vollstreckt und in lebenslange Haftstrafe umgewandelt.
Im Gefängnis schrieb Antoine Vumilia weitere Gedichte und arbeitete mit den Studios Kabako zusammen, einer Performing Art Gruppe, gegründet und unter der Leitung von dem kongolesischen Choreographie Künstler Faustin Linyekula und dem KVS (Königliches Flämisches Theater) in Brüssel. Zahlreiche seiner Gedichte wurden auf Bühnen in Europa, USA und Afrika aufgeführt, darunter „Un monologue de chien“ (2006), welcher ein zentraler Text in der Drama-/und Choreographie Aufführung „The Dialogues series iii: Dinozord“ unter der Leitung von Faustin Linyekula ist. Sein politisches Gedicht „More, more, more…future!“ (2009) diente als Songtext für die Tanz und Choreographie Performance von Faustin Linyekula, das unter anderem in „thekitchen“ in New York (2011) aufgeführt wurde.
In den Jahren seiner Inhaftierung dokumentierte er mit Hilfe einer eingeschmuggelten Kamera und unter Lebensgefahr die alltägliche Korruption und Brutalität im Gefängnis. Dieses exklusive Filmmaterial diente als Grundlage für die Dokumentarfilme „Who killed Kabila“ und „Antoine: a journey from Hell“ von Arnaud Zajtman und Marlène Rabaud. Nach zehnjähriger Inhaftierung, zunehmender Repressionen und Morddrohungen gelang Antoine Vumilia schließlich seine spektakuläre Flucht. Derzeit lebt Antoine Vumilia Muhindo im Exil in Kalmar (Schweden). Er ist Gründer des „Ishango“ Workshops in Brazzaville (Kongo) und tritt des Öfteren auf Bühnen in Europa und Afrika auf. Sein neustes Werk „Odyssee of a ghost“ ist ein Drama, in dem er rückblickend die Erfahrungen seiner Inhaftierung im berüchtigten Makala Gefängnis und seine Eindrücke im Exil schildert.
Im Juli 2013 war Antoine Vumilia in Berlin im Theaterstück „Sur les traces de Dinozord“ unter der Leitung von Faustin Linyekula zu sehen.

Poet and playwright, but also an actor and director, Antoine Vumilia describes himself as an "enraged artist”. The man who says that his art "feeds itself from the rage that people have to go and drink to the upstream of their destinies" was born in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. He discovered literature reading Victor Hugo and the fathers of the Negritude movement in the mid 1980s. In the same period he began his artistic training at the Workshop Theatre and the Poetry Club of the French Cultural Center in his native city, Kisangani. During his teenage years, he won twice in poetry competitions in his hometown between 1984 and 1987. At the end of his secondary education in Latin and philosophy, he continues his artistic experience in Goma, in this city in eastern Congo that has been bereaved by every kind of conflicts. In 1996 he is pursuing law studies at the university, when war broke out in his country. Vumilia then engages in the revolutionary movement that will sign the end of the 32-year dictatorship of Mobutu Sese Seko, and works in the presidency. But the new regime soon turns out to become a new dictatorship, and Laurent-Désiré Kabila, the new strong man, is murdered in January 2001. Vumilia along with a hundred other people end up in jail. He is convicted of treason and sentenced to death by a martial court after a trial unanimously condemned by organizations defending human rights.
In prison he continued to write and cooperates with Studios Kabako, a performing arts company founded by the congolese choreographer and director Faustin Linyekula and KVS (Flemish Royal Theatre) of Brussels. He wrote A dog´s monologue, which is a part of Linyekula´s show The Dialogue Series iii: Dinozord and poetic texts like More, more, more ... future!, which was used as songtext of a choreographic concert by Studios Kabako. His texts then resonate on the stages of Europe, America and Africa. This will cause to Vumilia a lot of trouble in prison. Desiring to further his testimony, he secretly films the horror of prison life. This testimony will be the red wire to two documentaries: Murder in Kinshasa: Who Killed Kabila?, and A Journey from the Hell by Marlène Rabaud and Arnaud Zajtman. After having faced further persecution and death threats, he managed to escape after nearly 10 years of incarceration, and now lives in exile in Sweden.
Since then Antoine Vumilia has reconnected with writing and the stage. He performs regularly on stages in Europe and Africa and has founded the performing arts company Ishango, based in Brazzaville. His last text, Odyssey of a ghost, is a drama that looks back on his experience of prison and exile.
Last summer (1st and 2nd July 2013) he performed in Berlin in “Sur les traces de Dinozord” directed by Faustin Linyekula.

Poète et auteur au théâtre, mais également comédien et metteur en scène, Antoine Vumilia se définit comme un « artiste enragé». Cet homme qui affirme que son art «se nourrit de la rage que les gens ont à aller s´abreuver en amont de leur destin», est née dans l´est de la République Démocratique du Congo. Il découvre la littérature en lisant Victor Hugo et les pères du mouvement de la négritude au milieu des années 1980. Dans la même période il entame une formation artistique à l’Atelier Théâtral et au Club de poésie du Centre Culturel Français de sa ville. Adolescent, ses poèmes sont primés deux fois lors de concours provinciaux entre 1984 et 1987. A la fin de ses études secondaires en latin et philosophie, il poursuit son expérience artistique à Goma, dans cette ville de l´est du Congo ravagée par des conflits. En 1996 il est en train de poursuivre des études de droit à l´université, lorsqu´une guerre éclate dans son pays. Vumilia s´engage alors dans le mouvement révolutionnaire qui va signer la fin des 32 ans du régime dictatorial de Mobutu Sese Seko, et travaille à la présidence de la république. Mais le nouveau régime devient à son tour une dictature, et Laurent-Désiré Kabila, le nouvel homme fort, est assassiné en janvier 2001. Vumilia avec une centaine d´autres personnes, se retrouvent en prison. Il est accusé de trahison et condamné à la peine capitale par une cour martiale à l´issue d´un procès unanimement condamné par les organisations de défense des droits de l´homme.
En prison il continue d´écrire et collabore avec les Studios Kabako, une compagnie d´arts du spectacle créée par le chorégraphe et metteur en scène congolais Faustin Linyekula et le KVS, le théâtre national royal flamand de Bruxelles. Il y écrit notamment Un monologue de chien, texte au cœur du spectacle The Dialogue Series iii: Dinozord et les textes poétiques de More, more,more…future ! Ses textes vont alors résonner sur les scènes d´Europe, d´Amérique et d´Afrique, ce qui vaudra à leur auteur bien des ennuis en prison. Désireux de pousser plus loin son témoignage, Il filme clandestinement l´horreur de la vie carcérale . Ce témoignage servira de fil rouge à deux documentaires Meurtre à Kinshasa : qui a tué Laurent-Désiré Kabila ? et Adieu l´enfer réalisés par Arnaud Zajtman et Marlène Rabaud et diffusés notamment sur Arte, TV 5 Monde et Aljazeera English. Après avoir fait face à de nouvelles persécutions et menaces de mort, Il réussit à s´évader au bout de près de 10 ans d´incarcération, et à s´exiler en Suède.
Depuis, Antoine Vumilia a retrouvé sa plume et la scène. Il joue et monte des spectacles régulièrement sur les scènes d´Afrique et d´Europe et a créé une compagnie du spectacle vivant, Ishango Workshops basée à Brazzaville. Son dernier texte est L´odyssée d´un fantôme est une pièce de théâtre qui revient sur son expérience de la prison et de l´exil.
